A receipt proves payment. An invoice asks for it.
A receipt proves it was paid. An invoice is what asks for it. That one sentence is the distinction people get wrong most often, and it is the reason a receipt cannot simply be an invoice with the word changed. An invoice is issued before money moves and creates the obligation. A receipt is issued after, and discharges it. If what you need is the asking document, the GST tax invoice generator is the tool for that job; this one is for the confirmation that follows.
A receipt from this maker records who received the money, who paid it, the date, the amount, what it was for and how it was paid — and, if you are GST registered, your GST number and the GST contained in the amount. That last line is the one that does the work: it lets a registered buyer see the tax they paid, and it lets you separate income from the portion you are holding for Inland Revenue.
WORKED EXAMPLE · $115.00 RECEIVED · GST-REGISTERED SELLER
- Total received (GST inclusive)
- $115.00
- GST included at 15%
- $15.00
- Amount excluding GST — your income
- $100.00

The split does not change what the customer paid. $115 is still $115; the receipt just says which $15 of it was never yours. For supplies over $200 to a GST-registered buyer, taxable supply information — a tax invoice — is the document IRD expects rather than a plain receipt, so issue both if the sale is large and the buyer is registered.
How this receipt splits the GST
- You enter the amount that actually arrived in your account or till. On a GST-registered sale that figure already contains the GST — nothing is added on top.
- The GST-inclusive total is divided by 23 and multiplied by 3. That is the 15% rate expressed as a fraction of the inclusive price (15/115 = 3/23), which is why the shortcut works on any amount.
- The GST component is subtracted from the total to give the GST-exclusive amount — the part that is actually your income.
- All three figures print on the receipt, so the payer can see what they paid and what portion of it was tax.
- Switch GST off and no GST line is calculated or printed. Showing GST on a receipt when you are not registered is not a formatting choice.
GST rate 15% (New Zealand, since 1 Oct 2010) GST included = total inclusive ÷ 23 × 3 Excluding GST = total inclusive − GST included $115.00 ÷ 23 × 3 = $15.00 GST $115.00 − $15.00 = $100.00 excluding GST

Receipts: small document, real consequences
A receipt is the humblest piece of business paperwork and the one most often skipped — usually with a shrug and "the bank statement shows it". A bank statement shows that money moved. A receipt shows what it was for, and that difference is exactly what matters in a deposit dispute, a warranty claim, an expense report or a tax review.
For cash it is not optional. Cash leaves no trail of its own, so the receipt is the only record either side has. Number them sequentially, keep your copy, and a market stall or cash job becomes as auditable as a bank transfer.
